The play we are studying for unit two is Blackout by Davey Anderson; the play is based on truth and is about a boy that is bullied, to face the bullies he changes himself dramatically, he has a lot of emotional problems because his granddad died of cancer and he's mum was beaten by his dad etc. Whilst changing to become tough this gets mixed up in the wrong crowd and end up taking drugs, loses control, an then tried to murder someone.
The play is written without stage directions or characters, it is mostly short dramatic sentences which means that rather than having a context to the lines they can be said however the actor wants it to be set giving leniency to perform the play however the actor likes.
It is very detailed in its own unique way which is intriguing and I think it works very well for the style of play it is.
I enjoyed reading the play because it held me in suspense of what was going to happen next, it builds atmosphere and tension and because of the way it is written I feel as though we will be able to interpret it how we would like to.
The play asks the audience to imagine as he describes his scenario, even whilst just reading it is very easy to imagine his situation making it engaging to audience members.
Every line is a bold line that is needed, the structure of it makes it so that every line is important and not lost by the actors.
I think that the play has good potential for everybody in the class to show there talents and skills and everyone will get equal parts in the play.
I like the fact that in the production notes the only rule that Davey Anderson gives is to not use blackouts in the play , as this is not what the play is about. The name 'Blackout' uses a play on words and could mean several things, It could be referring to when the narrator takes lots of drugs and blackout , thus not remembering what he had done or it could be referring to the fact that during the play he is very racist and believes he is better than black people.
Overall I think that this is a very good play and well suited to our class and I am looking forward to studying it in more depth and detail.
